COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAMINATION

There are eye examinations and there are eye examinations. At Vision Excellence Centre , we believe that an eye test should be comprehensive to check the health of your eyes, maximise your vision outcomes and look for early warning signs of any risks to your vision.

Our commitment to the health of your eyes is not just limited to taking measurements though. At Vision Excellence, we believe that an important part of the eye examination is to explain  patients what the results mean and give advice about the best steps you can take to maintain your vision at its best now and into the future.

What is Involved in a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

At Vision Excellence, we conduct a comprehensive examination of your eyes to enable us to assess and develop strategies to protect the health of your eyes and deliver the best vision that your eyes are able to achieve.

As part of your comprehensive eye test we will obtain an accurate refraction, ensuring that the two eyes are working together as a team. We then thoroughly check the health of your eyes. We don’t just check the pressure of the eyes and have a quick look at the central part of each retina.  your optic nerve and other parts of your eye that may be at risk of disease.

Our glaucoma assessment includes very sensitive tests of subtle changes to your eyes that occur well before you start to lose your peripheral vision so that we can initiate referral for early treatment to prevent blindness. We also screen for cataracts and and keratoconus. We keep permanent records of your eye test, including secure backups off-site locally, so we have baselines with which to compare later in your life allowing us to carefully monitor any changes to your vision as time goes on.

Some examples of the tests we conduct as part of your comprehensive eye exam include:

1.Refraction

Measuring your eyes to obtain an accurate prescription for your glasses or contact lenses should be a simple refraction process, but in many cases the eyes behave in a more complex way than you would imagine

Much of the information that is necessary to obtain a suitable prescription comes from you in a process called subjective refraction. Many of our patients report a history of anxiety in regard to giving the “right” answers when asked to make judgments about the clarity of images during the refraction process. For this reason, our optometrist likes to take a little extra time during the testing and, if necessary, to double-check or even triple-check your answers to the questions about which view is clearer. We like our patients to be as comfortable and as unhurried as possible during refraction so that a high level of confidence is achieved.

2.Binocularity or ‘Eye-Teaming’

What is the point of making each eye see clearly if the two eyes do not work as a team? If the brain is getting information from two eyes that are not working together, this may result in double vision (‘diplopia’) where one eye will see one thing and the other eye will be seeing something entirely different.

The visual system of the brain may also ignore the signals coming from one of the eyes (‘suppression’) which means that the composite vision is deprived of 50% of the information being provided by the eyes. This deprives a person of the richness of what we call stereoscopic vision.

3.Amblyopia

In children, suppression can result in amblyopia (often called “lazy eye”), a condition where one of the eyes does not develop properly and, if not treated by about age 6 or 7, can result in a permanent and irreversible deficiency in the clarity of vision.

The Danger of Online Eye Exams

Eye examinations should only be performed by an experienced and registered practitioner. Online eye tests do not provide the depth of examination necessary to assess the performance and health of your eyes. Your eyes are extremely complicated organs and could be impacted by any number of physiological issues or lifestyle factors which an online test is simply not equipped to detect.

We recommend that all our patients book a comprehensive eye exam with us every two years (unless advised to see us more regularly due to underlying medical factors) to allow us to fully understand and protect your vision. Reliance on online programs with their associated limitations does not provide you with the level of care that your eyes require.

Preparing for your Eye Exam

Before coming to your appointment at our practice, we encourage you to consider your visual needs, whether you need to see clearly at unusual distances when performing specific tasks, for example; in different work situations or when involved in particular activities such as involvement in sport or playing a musical instrument. Our optometrist always appreciates a challenge in prescribing the best optical solutions to our patients’ visual needs. Measurement of distances and even photographs or videos of your involvement in your chosen activity will often assist us in this regard to maximize your visual potential.

REFRACTION AND PRESCRIPTION

Measuring your eyes to obtain an accurate prescription for your spectacles or contact lenses should be a simple refraction process but in many cases the eyes behave in a more complex way than you would imagine. At Vision Excellence, our optometrist has to take many factors into account to ensure that you see as well as possible through your eyewear

POWER GLASSESAND SUNGLASSES

Power glasses

We are passionate about getting glasses right. Most people are not aware of the number of things that can affect the quality of a pair of glasses. Purchasing glasses online or going to a shop offering incentives may be attractive, but unfortunately our experience is that often the dispensing of the prescription is not done perfectly.

Sunglasses

Your eyes need protection from the damaging UV and blue light spectrum of the sun to prevent complications or serious eye conditions from impacting your vision later in life. Most people don’t realise that the sun damages the eyes as much as the skin, especially in kids and young adulthood, yet sunscreen is often remembered while sunglasses are forgotten!

The skin around the eyes is the most sensitive in the body; apart from the appearance of aging, this skin is particularly prone to some of the more dangerous skin cancers. UV exposure is also the main cause of cataracts (opacification of the crystalline lens inside the eye) and pterygium (abnormal thickening of the conjunctiva on the eyeball resulting in growth over the clear cornea at the front of the eye.

SOFT CONTACT LENSES

There are many types of contact lenses, and our optometrist can usually recommend a lens type to most people who need spectacles to see clearly.
We fit contact lenses of all types and our optometrist does not restrict our choice to just one type or brand or design of lenses. We have the expertise and facilities in our Norwest practice to fit soft and rigid gas-permeable lenses, multifocal contact lenses and disposable lenses including single-use ‘daily’ lenses.
The type of contact lens that our optometrist recommends to you will be very much about you, your lifestyle and your needs. Whether you feel that you want to wear contacts most of the time, or if you only want to wear them occasionally, our optometrist will tailor a wearing and replacement program that is appropriate to your needs

CHILDRENS VISION AND ORTHOPTICS

We offer a full check of a child’s eyes and a comprehensive assessment of the visual system including any abnormalities of binocular vision and are fortunate to have the services of two experienced orthoptists.

Strabismus (turned or lazy eye) Treatment

The treatment of strabismus by an orthoptist can involve the use of glasses, patching and eye exercises (vision therapy). We are able to utilise all of these treatment modalities to gain the best outcome for our patients. Time is allowed in all Eyetreat consultations for appropriate treatment sessions for patients and allows valuable discussion time with parents to explain the options for all treatments available using best evidence-based practice.

COLOR VISION ASSESMENT

The ability of the human eye to see colour, colour vision, is made possible by specific receptor cells in the retina of the back of the eye. These retinal receptor cells are known as “cones”. Unlike the other receptor cells (known as “rods”), the cones require more brightness for us to see, which is why the difference in our colour vision during the day or indoors in a well-lit room but we cannot perceive the colour of objects at night time or in a dark room.

There are three types of cones in the eye: one type detects red, one type detects green and one type detects blue. The three sets work together to give us the rich array of different colours that the human eye is able to perceive. Most people have normal colour vision but about 10% of men and 0.5% of women do not see some colours as well as the rest of the population. This deficiency in colour vision (often wrongly called “colour blindness”) is a result of one of the sets of cones being absent (known as “dichromacy”) from the eye or being less sensitive to light (known as “anomalous trichromacy”) than the other cones

KERATOCONUS SCREENING

At Vision Excellence , we are acutely aware of the serious impact that keratoconus can have on vision. This condition is a progressive disease of the very front layer of the eye, known as the cornea, more common in people with a family history and in people who often vigorously rub their eyes. For this reason, we have equipped our practice with instrumentation that will assess the risk or identify the presence of keratoconus and monitor changes in the condition of the cornea with time.
The main three aspects of the eye affected by keratoconus are corneal astigmatism, corneal curvature and corneal thickness. Our normal refraction procedures will allow measurement of the amount and orientation of any astigmatism in each eye. Where keratoconus is suspected, we are equipped to perform topographic mapping of the cornea of each eye, which will identify and quantify any irregularities in the curvature of the corneal surface and allow for future comparison of subtle changes.
